Accutane (isotretinoin) is a medicine that works by preventing your skin from producing too much of oily substance. It is used for patients diagnosed with severe forms of nodular acne. Make sure you observe the dose of this medicine recommended by your health care provider, since it is based on a number of factors, including your body weight, how severe your acne is and the way you responded to the treatment. Some patients need a dose adjustment because of side effects they experience. Side effects of this medicine are rare and can include the following: hearing problems, high triglycerides, dry eyes, nose lips and skin, and psychiatric problems.

If you develop any symptoms you were not warned about or the ones you had changed or became worse contact your health care provider immediately. If you have serious side effects of Accutane (vision changes, severe stomach pain, seizures) seek emergency medical assistance to prevent the situation from getting worse. In some patients, especially those with pre-existing bone problems, Accutane has been reported to contribute to decreased bone mineral density. If you have such a problem, talk to your doctor to see if the benefits outweigh potential risks.
